History of NDTBC
The New Delhi Tuberculosis Centre (NDTBC), established in 1940 through a collaboration between the Tuberculosis Association of India and the Government of India, played a pioneering role in tuberculosis (TB) control in India. At a time when sanatorium-based treatment was impractical due to limited resources, the Centre introduced the concept of “Organised Home Treatment,” a community-focused approach that later became the basis of domiciliary treatment under the National TB Control Programme.
In 1951, NDTBC became India’s first TB Demonstration and Training Centre with support from WHO and UNICEF. Over the years, it contributed significantly to TB research, healthcare training, epidemiological surveys, and the implementation of national TB control strategies, including DOTS. Today, the Centre remains a leading institution with advanced NABL-accredited laboratories and modern diagnostic facilities for TB, MDR/XDR TB, and public health support.
